Below, we have tried to answer the most common questions visitors to this our Web site may have. If you find that your question is not answered on this page, please E-mail us firstname.lastname@example.org
WHY BUILD FROM PLANS?
Not all DIYers build from plans for the same reasons- For some it is the satisfaction of contributing the maximum amount of personal involvement to the project. Cost is another factor that persuades DIYers to build from plans
DIYers tend to be an inventive and experimental group by nature and they like to customise designs to their own requirements and construction methods and it is a lot simply using plans as a base than starting from scratch. Besides it is fun seeing how others have tackled a problem the figuring out a way to improve on it
CAN ANYONE BUILD THE YARD DAWG?
You should be mechanically inclined or have a qualified person help you with the project. You should be comfortable with the equipment and tools that you will be using so that you do not injure yourself or anyone helping. We have tried to keep the project as simple as possible, but some basic mechanical ability, use of hand tools and a welder are required. The instructions are clear and if you follow the instructions, there should be no question how it goes together
HOW DETAILED ARE THE PLANS?
If the information to complete the YARD DAWG was not in the plans, we would have to answer a lot of e-mails. We still get the odd question, so the plans and this web site will be constantly updated.. Check back often.
WILL AN ADULT FIT INTO THE YARD DAWG?
Yes it's designed to fit a person over 6’ But with pedal placement options to suit shorter or younger drivers
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO BUILD THE YARD DAWG?
It could be as little as a few hundred dollars. I would suggest that you decide how much you have to spend on the project and work within that budget. A go kart that is drivable is more fun than a go kart sitting in the corner of the garage because the builder ran out funds for that hot motor or those trick aluminium wheels!
IS A KIT NECESSARY TO COMPLETE THE YARD DAWG?
There are suppliers who supply kits and weldments to reduce your construction time but they are not necessary. The plans are fully detailed so the YARD DAWG can be built from scratch from your locally available materials.
WHAT MATERIALS WILL I REQUIRE TO COMPLETE THE YARD DAWG AND WHERE DO I FIND THEM?
All materials, fasteners and bearings are listed in a bill of materials in the plans
Most can be sourced online but I would recommend you try your local vendors first
WHAT TYPE OF STEEL SHOULD I USE?
General purpose ERW tubing is adequate.
WHERE CAN I GET THE METAL PLATE PARTS?
Most can be cut from flat stock or angle or we supply DXF files for you to have them laser cut.
CAN A PART I HAVE ON HAND BE SUBSTITUTED?
Usually yes, if you are prepared to make adjustments in other areas (as they will usually be a knock on effect)
WHAT MOTOR SHOULD I USE?
I recommend a industrial (generator) horizontal shaft type motor between 4 and 6 hp (Honda GX 160, GX 200, Briggs and Stratton, Tecumseh etc.,
CAN I USE A TORQUE CONVERTOR INSTEAD OF A CENTRIFUGAL CLUTCH?
Yes you can, but it's more expensive and you may have to modify the engine mounting details.
CAN WE CHANGE THE TYRES AND/OR SPROCKETS?
Yes but be careful to calculate your final drive ratio- see links page
WHAT TOOLS WILL I REQUIRE?
A great deal of effort was spent developing the YARD DAWG go kart so that it could be built with only a few metalworking tools-typically the only tools needed to produce the YARD DAWG are
welder, electric drill, hack saw, vice, carpenter square, protractor, files. Other tools may be helpful, but not necessary.
WHERE CAN I GET THE TOOLS?
Check your local phone book for equipment rental places. You can rent welders for a fraction of the price it cost to buy one. The go kart frame could be welded up in a day if you plan and use your time wisely.
